Why Personalized Coaching Matters in Game Development
Why Launch a Game Dev Coaching Service?
I’ve been putting a lot of thought into properly launching my game dev coaching service, and I’d like to share some insights into why I’m doing this and how I’ve approached pricing it.
Over the years, I’ve been coaching aspiring game developers, mostly through word of mouth. These sessions are highly personalized, focusing on helping people improve their skills, land their dream jobs, or dive deeper into something they’re truly passionate about.
In addition to coaching, I’ve created tutorial content on YouTube to tackle common challenges in the game dev community. These tutorials aim to build a strong foundation of knowledge, but I’ve come to realize that most of the problems people face aren’t broad—they’re specific and nuanced. That’s where I see an opportunity to make a real difference.
To address this, I’m opening up 1-on-1 coaching sessions. These sessions are designed to go beyond the general advice in my tutorials and focus on helping individuals or teams overcome their unique challenges.
Finding the Right Price
Pricing, however, has been one of the trickiest parts to figure out. As a contractor, pricing is easy to justify because I can demonstrate the direct value I bring to a project. But with coaching, it’s different. My target audience is often beginner to intermediate developers or indie teams. They’re facing a dilemma:
"Should I spend hours piecing together tutorials, or invest in focused coaching to get answers and clarity faster?"
I’ve asked myself: how do I make this accessible while ensuring it’s sustainable for me? If the price is too high, only a few will sign up. Too low, and it’s not worth the time investment.
I broke it down into two parts: the value for the customer and the value for me.
For the customer, the value is clear—coaching helps them efficiently solve problems, refine their understanding, and move forward with confidence. For me, coaching deepens my understanding of what people are struggling with, helping me create better tutorials and training materials.
A Vision for the Future
This reflection also aligns with insights from my YouTube channel. Over time, I’ve noticed a strong connection between content quality and long-term performance. While most videos perform well initially, it’s the high-quality, evergreen content that continues to resonate with viewers years later. That’s the kind of value I want to bring—not just in videos but in coaching too.
Looking ahead, I see this as just the beginning. My dream is to expand this effort into books, courses, and seminars to help the next generation of game developers take their first steps with confidence. For now, this feels like the right step forward.
